MARQUES. Marques Bolden had a major game against Auburn today, where the Blue Devils showed some signs of youth but pulled out the win over a top-10, talented, and experienced Auburn team. It was not the best performance Duke’s had, and that will come with a young team of freshmen. As I said before, Marques Bolden stepped up to cover those weaknesses and even in a time of vulnerability, we showed just how good we can be in this win. Cam Reddish also had a major game- see below, “Cam Reddish hitting threes from a different island of Hawaii”. They’re not kidding.
Defense was not the highlight in this game unless your name is Marques Bolden. Marques went for a career-high (and basically anybody-high) 7 blocks (yes, I said seven!) alongside his 11 points and 9 rebounds. It’s easily the best we’ve seen him play during his career here at Duke. He played like the player we were promised back in 2016, or perhaps better. Duke’s freshmen weren’t playing their best defense (they looked, naturally, young) but Marques was able to overshadow that in part. We wouldn’t have won without him, period. Huge props to him.
Cam Reddish also had an epic game. Cam came up clutch with a 100% free throw mark (6-6) with multiple at the end of the game, which while it wasn’t as tight as the final score implies, it was still a close game in the final minutes so those points were all the more important.
The final minutes were, well, stressful, to say the least. Duke definitely needs to work on inbounding from the baseline, as turnovers happened well to often. Duke sometimes struggled to get the ball down the court and committed some ugly turnovers, but again, despite their immense talent this is still a team that starts four freshmen. There will be these issues.
I want to give big props as well not to a Duke player but to Auburn guard Jared Harper. This guy played his butt off and shot 60% from three on 10 shots. He led their team with 22 points and defended well on the other end of the court. Harper made some circus shots tonight, but the effort he showed was very impressive. Auburn, in general, played a great game- they fought like soldiers. Respect for that.
I just wanted to say that I am sorry for the delays/missed posts as of late. With holiday travel, I’m trying to keep up but previews for Auburn and SDSU have just slipped off. Sorry about that! Happy Thanksgiving, Krazies.
Bleed blue. Duke will face the winner of Gonzaga and Arizona tomorrow at 5:00pm.
